Abiquiu and New Mexico Events - January 2027
January is the quietest and coldest month of the northern New Mexico year: the village sees snow, the Chama freezes at the edges, and Plaza Blanca's white cliffs against a winter sky are the reason photographers come in the off season. A federal holiday on a Friday, which makes the first long weekend of 2027. Offices and most museums close; the skiing at Taos and Los Alamos and the hot springs at Ojo Caliente are the two things everyone else has the same idea about, so go early.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day (federal holiday)
Monday 18 January 2027
The third Monday of January, and the first long weekend since New Year's Day: federal and state offices close, schools close, and the ski hills and hot springs fill up. In the village it changes very little - mid-January is the deep quiet of the northern New Mexico year.

Also this monthThere is no organised village programme in January, and we would rather say so than pad the page. What the month is good for is the places the summer crowds queue for: the hot springs at Ojo Caliente, an hour away, and the walking at Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu Lake when the snow allows. See what is near Plaza Blanca and hiking and fishing. Santa Fe Restaurant Week does not open until 22 February, so January eating is whatever the village and Española have open - which is the local pace, at local prices.
