Abiquiu and New Mexico Events - October 2026
October is the month the Abiquiu valley turns: the cottonwoods along the Chama go gold, the balloon fiesta fills the sky over Albuquerque, and the village opens its studios for the year's biggest art weekend. Abiquiu Studio Tour (32nd annual)
Saturday 10 to Monday 12 October 2026
The one weekend of the year when the village's artists throw open their studios and the Chama River Valley becomes a self-guided driving tour. You drive between the stops at your own pace, meet the artists who work here, and buy from them directly rather than through a gallery. Most studios are open on the Saturday and Sunday, with a smaller number open on the Monday.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta (54th)
Saturday 3 to Sunday 11 October 2026
The largest balloon gathering in the world: hundreds of balloons lifting off at dawn from Balloon Fiesta Park, with evening sessions that are ticketed separately. The dawn launches need an early start and the park is roughly two and a half to three hours from Abiquiu - a long day, but the state's headline October spectacle.

Columbus Day (federal holiday)
Monday 12 October 2026
A federal holiday, so federal offices - national park and forest offices included - close while most shops and restaurants in Abiquiu, Española and Santa Fe stay open. It is the second Monday of October, which is exactly why the studio tour and the balloon fiesta both finish on this weekend: expect the busiest roads of the month.

Also this monthThe 2026 editions of the studio tour and the balloon fiesta have both finished, and neither organiser has published 2027 dates yet. In recent years the studio tour has run over the Columbus Day weekend, from the Saturday to the Monday, and the balloon fiesta has filled the first full week of October - but treat those as patterns rather than dates until the organisers post them. For the rest of the month the village itself is quiet, and that is the point: the last two weeks of October are the best walking and photography weather of the year here, with the cottonwoods at their peak along the Chama.
